Reflection on Surah At-Taghabun verse 11No kind of calamity can occur, except by the leave of Allah, SN Smith

“No kind of calamity can occur, except by the leave of Allah: and if anyone believes in Allah, (Allah) guides his heart (aright): for Allah knows all things.” (64:11
Nothing will happen unless Allah allows it to happen. When Allah destines something to take place, there is nothing that can stop that thing from taking place.
Likewise, if Allah does not destine for something to take place, there is nothing that can make it happen.
And reflect upon the following hadeeth:
Abu al-‘Abbas ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas(ra) reports:
“One day I was riding (a horse/camel) behind the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he said, ‘Young man, I will teach you some words. Be mindful of Allah, and He will take care of you. Be mindful of Him, and you shall find Him at your side. If you ask, ask of Allah. If you need help, seek it from Allah. Know that if the whole world were to gather together in order to help you, they would not be able to help you except if Allah had written so. And if the whole world were to gather together in order to harm you, they would not harm you except if Allah had written so. The pens have been lifted, and the pages are dry.’” (Related by Tirmidhi)
And this hadeeth:
On the authority of Abu Dharr al-Ghifaree (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from his Lord, that He said:
“O My servants! I have forbidden dhulm (oppression) for Myself, and I have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except those whom I have guided, so seek guidance from Me and I shall guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except those whom I have fed, so seek food from Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except those whom I have clothed, so seek clothing from Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you commit sins by day and by night, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and you will not attain benefiting Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as pious as the most pious heart of any individual amongst you, then this would not increase My Kingdom an iota. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as wicked as the most wicked heart of any individual amongst you, then this would not decrease My Kingdom an iota. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all to stand together in one place and ask of Me, and I were to give everyone what he requested, then that would not decrease what I Possess, except what is decreased of the ocean when a needle is dipped into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I account for you, and then recompense you for. So he who finds good, let him praise Allah, and he who finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself.” [Muslim]
Why Allah allows things to happen is not a question we can answer with knowledge. Our role is to accept what Allah has decreed without asking why. We must accept the fact that Allah knows all things and that we, His creation, only knows what He has permitted us to know, and that is very little.
We cannot have the arrogance of thinking that we know better than Allah how things should be.
Allah says in the Quran: “But if the Truth had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away.” (23:71)
Of course, Islam does not teach fatalism where we just sit back and do nothing at all and depend on Allah to work things out for us while we wait for it to happen.
If we want a good job, we have to get training.
If we want to been in good shape, we must eat well and exercise.
In addition, if we see someone who is in need, then we don’t simply say that this is the person’s destiny and not help them. No, we help them as much as we can with acts of charity.
Also, if we see an act of injustice, we don’t simply throw up our hands and leave it to Allah’s destiny, rather we seek to correct that injustice to the best of our ability.
We, as believers, are expected to make effort, but we must also know that Allah determines the outcome of those efforts, and sometimes we do everything to ensure things work out a certain way, yet those things don’t work out as planned. This is where we have to accept what Allah has decreed and not question it or fall into despair.
And prophet Yacub said to his sons:
“Further he said; ‘O my sons! Enter not all by one gate: enter ye by different gates. Not that I can profit you aught against Allah (with my advice): none can command except Allah: on Him do I put my trust and let all that trust put their trust on Him.'” (12:67)
In others words, one can take every precaution, and there is nothing wrong with doing so, but if Allah decrees something there is nothing one can do to change that decree.
Further, Allah says in Surah al-Hadid verses 22-23:
“No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being – indeed that, for Allah, is easy -In order that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.”
We always hope the best from Allah, think well of Him and make supplication to Him while, at the same time, making effort. But we also accept His decree if we don’t always get everything we ask for. Note the following hadeeth:
The Prophet (pbuh) said, “Allah the Most High said, ‘I am as My servant thinks (expects) I am. I am with him when he mentions Me. If he mentions Me to himself, I mention him to Myself; and if he mentions Me in an assembly, I mention him in an assembly greater than it. If he draws near to Me a hand’s length, I draw near to him an arm’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.’” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]
Only as we embrace this balanced approach can we have a healthy relationship with Allah and our deen.
