Not Too Long Ago

By Reeham Choudhury, Brookline High School Junior, Brookline, MA

Not too long ago

There was not much to think about

I only focused on my toys and shows

On only a few occasions did I pout

Not too long ago

I lived a life of ease

There was not much I needed to know

I basically did as I pleased

Not too long ago

All I had on my mind

Was fun, and nothing more

I had so much time

Not too long ago

I spent many hours with friends and family

Watched Spiderman and Clifford

I did everything happily

Not too long ago

I slid down every slide

I swung on every swing

My skill on monkey bars was my pride

Not too long ago

I pretended to be a spy

Always saving the world

Just my friends and I

Not too long ago

I had my first Pokemon

I also had a coloring book

And a favorite crayon

But now everything has changed

I’m getting older

I would love to sit back and relax

But these duties weigh on my shoulders

Everything has changed

I think about school, and college

I think a lot about my future

I feel a lot of stress, I must acknowledge

Everything has changed

I have to take test after test

Assignment after assignment

And I’m told that it’s for the best

Will I go where I want?

Or will I not?

Will I accomplish my goals?

My brain can’t stop this flood of thoughts

But every now and then

I get to let it all go

Become as carefree as I used to be

Not too long ago
