Account for hearing, Speaking, Seeing and Understanding, Dr Emdad Khan
Human being is an intelligent creation. God gave him 4 critical faculties/ senses such as hearing, speaking, seeing and understanding. They allow us to function as a normal human being. If any one of these are missing at birth or by accident, we have various degrees of challenges to function as normal human being. Also, He provided other useful faculties: touch, smell and taste to supplement the major faculties.
If any of the four essential faculties are missing, we will be able realize how much fortunate God made us to have those and we will become more sympathetic to others who has one or more of these faculties missing or not functioning properly.
God in his ultimate wisdom, test different persons different way and he sometimes test us by not giving one or more of these functions. But in Surah Abasa, God reminded Prophet Muhammed pbuh, to give proper attention to a blind companion when he came to get some advice compared to Quraish leaders. This example also serves as a lesson for us, that if any of the human being has one or more of these functional capabilities missing, these is simply a test from God, and we should give extra attention to these persons to make the challenging daily life a bit easy.
In our everyday lives, we often encounter handicapped people. We should all thank God for creating us free of disabilities while simultaneously saying a prayer for them, who have one or more functional challenges
But as God stated, only few of us are thankful . It is He, Who has created for you (the sense of) hearing (ears), eyes (sight), and hearts (understanding). Little thanks you give. (23.78)
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنشَأَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرَ وَٱلۡأَفۡـِٔدَةَۚ قَلِيلاً۬ مَّا تَشۡكُرُونَ (٧٨) سُوۡرَةُ المؤمنون
The Qur’an says: “Whoever gives thanks, gives thanks only for his own sake” (An-namal 27:40,Luqman 31:12). وَمَن شَكَرَ فَإِنَّمَا يَشۡكُرُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ
Scholars state expression of gratitude for all the physical faculties means refraining from sin, and using them to help one to do acts of obedience.
God states, we have to account for our faculties on the day of judgement.
إِنَّ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡبَصَرَ وَٱلۡفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ كَانَ عَنۡهُ مَسۡـُٔولاً۬ (٣٦) سُوۡرَةُ بنیٓ اسرآئیل / الإسرَاء
Surah Al-Isra. Verily! The hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those one will be questioned (by Allâh). (17.36)
ٱلۡيَوۡمَ نَخۡتِمُ عَلَىٰٓ أَفۡوَٲهِهِمۡ وَتُكَلِّمُنَآ أَيۡدِيہِمۡ وَتَشۡہَدُ أَرۡجُلُهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ (٦٥)
This Day, We shall seal up their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their legs will bear witness to what they used to earn (36.65)
Remaining in a state of gratitude helps us to recognize how much we have in our lives that many others do not; it teaches us to count our blessings rather than look at what we are lacking. Gratitude is a sense of fulfillment that comes not from wanting more but rather from knowing that God has already blessed us with what we need.
Everything that happens to us – even events that we may consider to be personal afflictions or natural disasters-are from Allah. The Prophet pbh said:”How wonderful is the case of a Believer! There is good for him in whatever happens to him -and none, apart from him, enjoys this blessing. If he receives some bounty, he is grateful to Allah and this bounty brings good to him. And if some adversity befalls him, he is patient, and this affliction, too, brings good to him” (Muslim).
Physical vs Spiritual Limitations: (Spiritually Not hearing, deaf, not speaking/Mute, dump, not seeing, blind): Besides physical limitation to these faculties but God also, over 20 places, in the Quran stated about the wilful misuse of these faculties by some of the human beings.
They are the ones who trade guidance for misguidance. But this trade is profitless, and they are not [rightly] guided. Their example is that of someone who kindles a fire, but when it lights up all around them, Allah takes away their light, leaving them in dark nesses, unable to see. They are [willfully] deaf, dumb, and blind, so they will never return [to the Right Path]. (Sura al Baqara 16:18)
Those who reject the truth, although they may have the physical organs and faculties for believing, seeing and hearing, are akin to the blind and deaf person, only worse, because “seals” are placed over the spiritual insight of the heart, eyes and ears, due to their obstinate rejection of the truth.
صُمُّۢ بُكۡمٌ عُمۡىٌ۬ فَهُمۡ لَا يَرۡجِعُونَ (١٨)
They are deaf, dumb, and blind, so they return not (to the Right Path). (18)
What man sought was the light of truth and salvation; what he kindled was fire. Hypocrisy, fraud, arrogance, all the evil vices once again prevailed at the expense of truth, sincerity, and all noble virtues.
وَلَقَدۡ ذَرَأۡنَا لِجَهَنَّمَ ڪَثِيرً۬ا مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ وَٱلۡإِنسِۖ لَهُمۡ قُلُوبٌ۬ لَّا يَفۡقَهُونَ بِہَا وَلَهُمۡ أَعۡيُنٌ۬ لَّا يُبۡصِرُونَ بِہَا وَلَهُمۡ ءَاذَانٌ۬ لَّا يَسۡمَعُونَ بِہَآۚ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ كَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ بَلۡ هُمۡ أَضَلُّۚ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰفِلُونَ (7.179) سُوۡرَةُ الاٴعرَاف
And surely, We have created many of the jinn and mankind for Hell. They have hearts wherewith they understand not, and they have eyes wherewith they see not, and they have ears wherewith they hear not (the truth). They are like cattle, nay even more astray; those! They are the heedless ones. (7.179) Surah Al-Araf)
Conclusion: Way Out
فَٱصۡبِرۡ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ۬ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلۡعَشِىِّ وَٱلۡإِبۡڪَـٰرِ (٥٥) سُوۡرَةُ المؤمن / غَافر
So be patient, Verily, the Promise of Allâh is true, and ask forgiveness for your sin, and glorify the praises of your Lord in the evening and in the morning (40. 55) Surah Ghafir / Momeen
