Dear Respected Friends in Ottawa,
BACAOV organizes a special ceremony to observe the International Mother Language Day (IMLD) 2020 in Ottawa City Hall on Thursday, February 20, 2020
We are pleased to inform you that Bangladesh Canada Association of Ottawa Valley (BACAOV)―the first and oldest Bangladeshi association in Ottawa―is going to organize a special ceremony to observe the International Mother Language Day (IMLD) 2020 here in Ottawa.
Bangladesh has been observing 21st February as its Mother Language Day since 1952 to pay glowing tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives on this day to protect our dear mother language Bangla. In 2000, the UNO declared
21st February as the International Mother Language Day (IMLD) with an aim to protect all mother languages. (On 17 November 1999, UNESCO designated 21 February as International Mother Language Day.) The IMLD is now observed worldwide to promote love for mother languages, cultural diversity and multilingualism.
To conform to this cultural convention, Bangladeshis and other nationals living in Ottawa will remember and pay homage to the martyrs of the Language Movement of 1952 by offering flowers and floral wreaths at the altar of a specially built Shaheed Minar.
The event will start at 10:00 pm on Thursday, February 20, 2020 and will include songs and poem recitation dedicated to the Language Movement. Placing flowers at the Shaheed Minar will begin at midnight.
We invite all Bangladeshi organizations and individuals coming to respect the heroes of our Language Movement. We request you bringing flowers to offer. Your participation will glorify the occasion.
Time: 10:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
(offering flowers at the Shaheed Minar at 12:01 midnight)
Date: Thursday, February 20, 2020
Venue: Ottawa City Hall, 110 Laurier Ave W, Ottawa, ON K1P 1J1 (Councillor’s Lounge, 2nd Floor)
Thank you for your continuous support & cooperation.
With sincere thanks,
Bangladesh Canada Association of Ottawa Valley (BACAOV)
