How to Deal During the Times of Difficulties and Calamities, Dr Emdad Khan, Ottawa
Let us learn how to cope with calamities. Panicking will not make the calamity go away, and in fact it makes it worse. events only 10%, how we react/handle 90%
As Muslims, we believe that everything is in the hands of our Creator, the Almighty God During times of trials and hardships for some of us, our faith can get shaken. During those times, we should remind ourselves that a believer’s position and rank is raised in front of God and that such a hardship may very well be a sign of God’s love for us. This can help us in maintaining and even strengthening our faith.
Allah swt also clearly stated that any calamity befalls on us is with his wisdom to purify us, and to raise our status. As in Sura Al-Mulk He states
Surah Al-Mulk Who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed.
He further says, in Soora Al-Hadid, v 57.22
No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfûz), before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allâh. (57.22) In order that you may not grieve at the things that you fail to get, nor rejoice over that which has been given to you. And Allâh likes not prideful boasters. (57.22
The Al-mighty, again, reminds believers, in Sura Tagaboon, v64.11
Surah At-Taghabun
No calamity befalls, but by the Leave [i.e. Decision and Qadar (Divine Preordainments)] of Allâh, and whosoever believes in Allâh, He guides his heart [to the true Faith with certainty, i.e. what has befallen him was already written for him by Allâh from the Qadar (Divine Preordainments)], And Allâh is the All-Knower of everything. (64. 11)
In Sura Baqara, v2.155, He describes, how is going to test us and what we should do in that situation
And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient. (2.155)
Tools given to Believers: Dua of Propjet Adm and Ma Hawa AHS: Sura Araf v7.23, take the ownership of our mistakes and seek forgiveness
They said: “Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers.” (7.23) Surah Al-Araf
Dua Younus: Sura Ambia v21.87, seek Help of God
Surah Al-Anbiya
And (remember) Dhun-Nûn (Jonah), when he went off in anger, and imagined that We shall not punish him (i.e. the calamites which had befallen him)! But he cried through the darkness (saying): Lâ ilâha illa Anta [none has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allâh)], Glorified (and Exalted) are You [above all that (evil) they associate with You]. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers.” (21.87)
The Prophet (SallAllahu Alyhi wasallam) said to his companions:“Shall I not tell you some words which, if distress or grief befalls any of you and he makes this du’aa, it will bring him joy? It is the du‘aa’ of Dhoo’l-Noon (i.e. Yunus or Jonah): ‘There is no god but You, Glory to You; verily I was one of the wrongdoers.’”
(Saheeh al-Jaami‘, no. 2605).
Steps to Deal with Calamity: events only 10%, how we react/handle 90%
There are things which, if the one who is stricken with calamity thinks about them, that will make the calamity easier for us
– If we look at what has befallen, we will find that what his Lord has left for us is like it or better than it, and if we patient and accepts it, He has stored up for us –
– He still has something that is many times greater than what he has lost in this calamity, and if God willed He could have made the calamity even greater.
– Thinking of those who have been hit even harder. people who are tested, either by missing out on something that they like, or by having happen to them that which they dislike..
– Panicking makes one’s enemy rejoice and makes one’s friend feel sad; it makes God angry and makes the shaytaan happy;
– it destroys reward and weakens resolve. If he is patient, seeks reward, strives to please Allah, to make his friend happy and to make his enemy sad
– what comes after being patient and seeking reward is pleasure and joy that is many times greater than what he could have got from keeping what he lost
– He be glorified – did not send this calamity in order to destroy us or, rather He is checking on us, testing our patience, acceptance and faith; we make du’aa’ and supplication,
– Without trials and tribulations, we could develop arrogance, self-admiration,which would lead to our doom in this world and in the Hereafter
– the bitterness of this world is the essence of sweetness in the Hereafter.
Trial is a sign of Love by Allah swt and Trial and tests Bring Great Rewards
Calamities and disasters are a test, and they are a sign of Allah’s love for us because they are like medicine: even though it is bitter
Anas ibn Malik narrated that the Prophet (S) said says: “The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial. When Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever accepts that wins His pleasure but whoever is discontent with that earns His wrath.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (2396)
Patience: Key to Success: We should also realize that our patience when facing difficulties raises our status in front of Allah and may lead to the forgiveness of our sins. He says in the Quran:
Say (O Muhammad SAW): “O My slaves who believe, be afraid of your Lord (Allâh) and keep your duty to Him. Good is (the reward) for those who do good in this world, and Allâh’s earth is spacious ()! Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning.” (39.10) Surah Az-Zumar
Reward in Good Time and Reward in Challenging Time:
The Messenger (S) said in a well-known hadith the following:“How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for his affairs are all good, and this applies to no one but the believer. If something good happens to him, he is thankful for it and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience and that is good for him.”(Narrated by Mu slim, 2999).
Calamities and Problems – Trials or Punishment?
When Punishment: If when we show displeasure and panic, then the calamity is not an honor from Allah to raise us in status.
When test to Raise Status: If we show true servitude, gratitude, praise, repentance and submission to Him, then this calamity is a kind of honor and raising in status.
