Intention and Actions, Dr. Emdad Khan

  • Purpose of Life:

وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ (٥٦) سُوۡرَةُ الذّاریَاتat

I did not create the Jinn and the human beings except for the purpose that they should worship Me. (56) Surah Adh-Dhariya

For eating, sleeping, working truthfulness, honesty, generosity, courage, and humbleness; all are worship through sincere intention and obedience to God.

If a person performs the various activities with good intention, they will be rewarded and entire life to become an act of worship. “Helping a person or his belongings onto his mount is an act of charity.  A good word is charity.  Every step taken on the way to performing prayers is charity.  Removing an obstacle from the road is charity.” (Al-Bukhari)

“If he is working to support his small children or to support his elderly parents, then it is for the sake of God.  If he is working to occupy himself and keep his desires in check, then it is for the sake of God.  If, on the other hand, he is doing so to show off and earn fame, then he is working for the sake of Satan.” (as-Suyuti)

  • Intention of doing an action:

وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓاْ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ حُنَفَآءَ وَيُقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤۡتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ‌ۚ وَذَٲلِكَ دِينُ ٱلۡقَيِّمَةِ (٥) سُوۡرَةُ البَیّنَة

And they are commanded except that they should serve God, keeping religion pure for Him, as men by nature upright, and to establish worship and to pay the poor-due. That is true religion. (98.5) Surah Al-Bayyina

  • Prophet (PBUH) stated, “All actions are judged by motives, and each person will be rewarded according to their intention.  Thus, he whose migration was to God and His Messenger, his migration is to God and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated.” Stated Muhammed (PBUH)
  • Who is Real Poor?

We must use our tongues and hands properly, otherwise on the final day, in the court of God, we will be disgraced and real poor.

The Messenger of Allah asked his Companions; do you know who is a poor person?

The companions asked him who and the Prophet continued, “The poor person is he who comes to God with a mountain of good deeds but has been careless at the same time. He lies at some point, hurts someone, or calls someone names. These people will come and demand their rights on the Day of Judgment, so God will start distributing his good deeds among them. His good deeds will finish but their rights will not. God  will then take these peoples’ sins and start collecting them on this person’s head. These sins will pile up like a mountain. Such a one is called a poor person, one who has accumulated a mountain of good deeds but has been careless with his tongue and his hands at the same time, on the Day of Judgment.

  • Wrong Intention to be questioned by God: Martyr, Scholar, Rich

Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that God’s Messenger (PBUH) say:

“The first of people against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who died a martyr. He will be brought and God will make known to him His favors and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say, ‘And what did you do about them?’ He will say: ‘I fought for you until I died a martyr.’ He will say, ‘You have lied – you did but fight that it might be said [of you], “He is courageous.” And so it was said.’ Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face & cast into Hell-fire.

[Another] will be a man who has studied knowledge and has taught it and who used to recite the Qurʾān. He will be brought and God will make known to his His favors and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say, ‘And what did you do about them?’ He will say, ‘I studied knowledge and I taught it and I recited the Qurʾān for Your sake.’ He will say: ‘You have lied – you did but study  knowledge that it might be said [of you], “He is learned.” And you recited the Qurʾān that it might be said [of you], “He is a reciter.” And so it was said.’ Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face & cast into Hell-fire.

[Another] will be a man whom God had made rich and to whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He will be brought and God will make known to his His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say, ‘And what did you do about them?’ He will say, ‘I left no path [untrodden] in which You like money to be spent without spending in it for Your sake.’ He will say, ‘You have lied – you did but do so that it might be said [of you], “He is open-handed.” And so it was said.’ Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face & cast into Hell-fire.”
